What define best electric skateboards?
When making a review for any product, we focus more on real experience after using. However, it’s important for you to know the technical measurements to have a clear and more rounded understand about stuff you’re going to buy. Below, we will list down 7 factors you need to consider when buying a electric skateboard, especially, the cheap one under $500 we’re seeking.
Power of the motor
What is the difference between an old-school skateboard and an electric on? That is, with an electric skateboard, you don’t need a push to make it move. Because, it has a motor. The power of a motor almost determine how your e-skateboard will perform. How fast can you ride? How much uphill angle can you ride? There are two type motor; single and dual. For your easy understanding, single-motor skateboard has only 1 motor embedded to the back rear wheel while dual-motor has both for front and back. Dual-motor, of course, makes your e-board stronger and faster but you need to sacrifice the smoothness of free riding. However, in recent models, with the evolvement of technology, dual-motor now can offer a high performance but still keep the feeling of an original skateboard.
Battery & Charging Time
Battery is the “fuel” to your electric skateboard. It determines how long you can use your board. The higher battery usage the better it is. Of course, you don’t want to carry it on your shoulder when it runs “out of juice”. Another essential factor is charging time. This is especially important to people who travel frequently with the e-skateboard. You will want to make sure the board has enough time charging before the next ride.
Range Of 1 Ride
If you buy an electric skateboard for daily commuting, you need to know far you can ride with a single fully-charged board. Need to consider whether it’s enough for a rounded-trip without worrying about the distance. Sure, you can recharge if you have enough time.
Weight of an e-skateboard is much higher than an original one. It’s totally fine if you board has enough battery for your ride, because this is what it’s designed for. But in case it runs out of “gas”, what will do you? Kick push or carry it on your shoulders. Weight is a matter.
Most of electric skateboards nowadays are designed to have a fairly amount of speed. It’s enough for a good commuting, city traveling tour. However, if you’re looking for something more extreme, consider the top speed of your board. The manufacturers will always declare the max speed of their board, but keep it mind that it will depend on many conditions, such as weight, tires, surface of street,…
Up Hill Angle
It determines what is max angle your e-board can climb. Consider this factor if you usually ride through steep road.

Our #1 Rated
This Backfire G2S is our top choice for those who want a e-skateboard which is under $500. This board is equipped with an in-hub 600W dual motor which is enough for normal use. Good things about rear hub motor is that it wouldn’t make big noise and still great for your free riding. This motor is still powerful enough for a max weight at 260lbs and could ride up to 23.5mph (really depends on weight of rider, I’m 160lbs). The motors and tires can be independently replaced, give you more options for tires. And you shouldn’t worry much about the maintenance cost.
This motor is compatible with both 80mm and 96 wheels. If you want higher torque for faster acceleration, you can choose 80mm wheels. These wheels are also suitable for drifting or sliding. In case you want a comfortable and stable ride on rough roads, 96mm wheels is a better choice. Both are come free with the box. Battery is the standard one with 36V and 5Ah. It’s enough to offer you 12 miles continuous riding in Sport mode and up to 15 miles in Eco mode. Of course, it may vary, but more or less like that. However, I expected more than that from a 10s2p of Samsung 25R and 3.5 hours for fully charging is too slow.
The deck of this Galaxy G2 is made from 8 layers of Hard Rock Maple which offers flexibility and adsorbs vibration and shock during riding quite well. I like the mild bow in the center of the deck, it holds you feet well, great for riding in high speed.
In overall, based on all the electric skateboards we’ve tested, this could be the best e-skateboard under $500. It’s a whole different story if you have more money for it. But with limited fund, this one is great for convenient and fun.
Very good looking, well-finished and highly-polished
Fast and stable in high speed
Good for free ride
Low maintenance cost
Slow charging time

Ranking number two in the list is this Meepo V2 Electric Skateboard. If you are a fan of speed, you may love this e-board. With strong dual rear hub motors at 800W, it’s probably one of the most powerful board in its price range. That’s why it could reach to max speed at 29mph. I am 160lbs, and in my test, I can ride up to 28.2mph, but it’s against the wind. It could be much faster in normal condition. With powerful motor, this Meepo V2 electric skateboard is also ideal for steep uphill commutes. It can climb up hill up to 30% grade.
However, its motors are not replaceable, so it might be expensive to replace if they are down. But I’ve been using it for nearly 3 months, so far so good. Also, this V2 is designed for short commutes, since its max range is only 11 miles. But in reply, the charging time is very short at 2 hours only. Moreover, they offer option to upgrade to Sanyo battery that could push max range to 17 miles. This is an expensive deal so you need to consider.
With V2’s high speed, the manufacturer also improved its braking system. Braking power will gradually increase when you move the throttle wheels, help to eliminate any jerks or halting from the board. It’s also equipped with Shredder trucks which is double barrel bushing, reduces shocks and maintain stability in high speed.
So, if you are searching for an electric skateboard with high speed, high stability and affordable price, consider this Meepo V2.
Powerful motors for steep hill
Stable in high speed
Fast charing time
Motors are not replaceable
Short riding range

If there is one thing I need to give a praise for this H5 e-skateboard, it’s the design. It’s extremely thin that could make you think this H5 is a regular skateboard. The manufacturer has hide a super thin built-in battery inside the deck. However, it still has enough power for a standard e-skateboard with 760W dual motors, offers max speed up to 22mph, more than enough for getting down town, city traveling and commuting.
The deck is really nice, which made with 10 layers of Canadian maple and 1 layer fiberglass on top. It gives you a medium flex, great for a smooth riding. It is also a drop-through deck that lower the center of gravity, offer you a more stable and confident ride, especially in high speed. The wheels come along with the board is quite big at 90mm, suitable for riding in various urban road surfaces.
Fast charing time at 2 hours is also a plus point for this Teamgee H5. There’s a concern in the built-in battery as it’s not replaceable, but so far, I haven’t seen any complaint about it, at least mine is still good after 4 month riding. And Teamgee has a very good customer service as I’ve been experience, so for any issue, don’t hesitate to contact them.
Beautiful design with extremely thin board
Powerful dual motors
Drop-through deck for more stable riding
Fast charging time
Irreplaceable built-in battery

This Blitzart Tornado is a standard e-skateboard in its segment. Every component is in a fairly good quality. Riding experience is really cool. With my weight (160 lbs), I can reach to 22.6mph, while max speed from manufacturer is 23mph. Brushless hub motors make riding smooth with very low noise. The experience of free ride is great, very much like an original skateboard since this board is quite light, compared to others, only 12 lbs.
The deck is made really nice with 8 layers, in which 6 layers of maple in the middle and 2 layers of bamboo on top and bottom. This increases flexibility and sturdiness of the deck, support max weight up to 250 lbs.
This Blitzart Tornado offers a range at 12 miles and up hill climbing at 20% grade which meet the demand most riders. One thing I’m not happy with is slow charging time at 3.5 hours. Nevertheless, with tight budget, this e-board, in our view, is one of the most value for money one in the market.
Flexible and sturdy deck
Good for free ride
Value for money
Slow charging time

This Wowgo 2S board is quite similar to the Blitzart Tornado above. It comes with a very good standard quality, and can be call the “golden boy” in the tight budget segment so we just can’t put it out of the list.
Although, the 500W dual motors seem to be less power compared to others mentioned in this list; it still can offer you a ride at 23.6mph. In my reality test ride, I could reach to 24.06mph, measured by GPS Speed application. The claimed range is 12 miles but i could only manage to 10.67, it might be due to the bad condition of the road. However, I always design my ride test to come out with a least optimistic result, so you can be sure that this is the min range you can expect from this Wowgo 2S. But to be fair, this is an acceptable distance for a 4Ah pack of battery.
About the riding experience, the board rides and carves sleekly and beautifully with its price. It can accelerate to the max speed quickly but smoothly, give you confidence for a joyful ride. The brake is somehow gradual but responsive.
The only lowlight I would mention is that in standard pack, the motors and tires are inseparable, so if the tires are worn out, you need to replace the whole motor.
Fast and stable
Good riding experience
Beautiful and polished deck
Value for money

Well, this MotoTec skateboard is the most special “child” in the family. The is more of an off-road electric skateboard. Riding it is super fun, I must say. It’s equipped an super powerful dual motor at 1600W, double than most of boards having the same price. This offers you to have a ride through whatever surface, 30% grade hill climbing is a piece of cake, and riding on the beach is extremely exciting. Top speed can reach to 20-22mhp which is amazing for beast like this.
However, there are somethings you need to know. First, this boy is insanely heavy, 71 lbs weight is a crazy number for a skateboard. So, don’t expect for a free ride, you can never kick-push it for half of a mile. And it’s a big trouble when battery runs out. Second, because of high capacity of motors, the max range is very short, only 10 miles, and could be less than that if different conditions. And it takes a long time for fully charging, 3-5 hours.
Overall, you can expect much in an off-road skateboard under $500. This MotoTec could be one of the best in its segments. Sacrifice efficiency for fun, worth it or not? You can make the call.
Super fun when riding
Extremely strong motors
Great for steep hill riding
Can ride on rough, rocky roads
Slow charging time

If you have even a tighter budget, you can consider this Teamgee H8. It has a much cheaper price than one I’ve recommended. Of course, the quality goes with the price. But you’ll get what you pay for.
Similar to Teamgee H5, this H8 electric skateboard is ultra thin thanks to built-in battery. The deck is made from 10 ply Canadian maple and 1 layer of fiberglass on top to protect it from scratch. The 480W dual motor of e-board offers up to 15mph max speed and 8 miles for one single full charge. These are acceptable numbers and enough to have an exciting for regular use.
Again, I put this H8 into the list for those who don’t want to spend a big investment for an e-skateboard. However, with with its price, this Teamgee H8 has my praise for the quality and performance.
Very reasonable price
Suitable for beginners
Good feeling of free ride

However, if your mind are still going around these 7 options. Let’s once again remind you the e-board that we rank number one for best e-skateboard with tight budget. It’s the Backfire G2S. It has the perfect balance between efficiency, riding performance and price. Besides, the outlook is extraordinary. There’s a low point in charging time but it’s minor. It’s still my best choice at the moment.
