What longboard type we recommend for beginners?
First of all, let me quickly brief you about types of longboard. There are many ways to classify longboard, bases on purpose, shapes of deck… But for starters, we will only talk about your use of longboards.
So, bases on purpose, we can simply divide longboards into 4 types:
As simple as its name, freeride longboards are designed for a leisure run whether in the city, or downhill with an average speed. This type of longboard required a fairly skilled board control to enjoy the ride to the fullest. But believe, it ain’t too hard to master.
For sure, downhill longboards are the best for downhill racing. Well, it is probably the fastest, most exciting but also the most dangerous longboard style out there. If you are totally new to longboarding, you still can have downhill longboard as your first one. However, before you can slide down the hill enjoy the excitement of high speed and wind, you must not fall first. It will take time but believe me, the result is worth it.
Tricks, stunts, dancing and almost other skateboard techniques, you can perform them all with freestyle longboards. Being creative in the ride, this what freestyle longboard is made for. It’s a good start for beginner but still fantastic for pro riders who want to make the best of their moves.
The last type in this list is cruising/carving longboarding. Carving is one of the basic skills that every riders need to master. Although it is basic but this is an awesome technique that allow you make a beautiful and smooth turn from this angle to another one. Master this skill and you step out of beginners’ zone. And carving/crusing longboards will make it easy for you.
Above are 4 most common types of longboard. Many agree that carving longboards are the most suitable for beginners. It’s totally right. This type helps newbie quickly master the basic skills set of riding a longboard. Then they can try out other types after that.
However, I have a different thought. When my son, James started to ride longboard, i picked for him a freeride one. This is the longboard type I would recommend for beginners. Let me tell you why. If you are really love riding, you will soon get acquainted to basic skills and eager to try new thing. A carving longboard is good but will limit your experience. You need to buy other one if you want to try a downhill riding, or learn more advanced techniques. While you absolutely can do it all with a freeride longboard. Of course, it is just for beginner level. But that’s enough.

I would love to introduce you this first longboard which is also the best for beginners that we recommend. It’s a drop-through longboard of VOLADOR. Before we go to the details of what bring it to top of the list. Let me make one thing clear, your first investment. If you really love longboarding and wanna stay with it in longterm, do not hesitate to invest for your first longboard. A cheap, plastic, bad-looking stuff will not last for long, and more importantly, it will ruin your excitement of riding.
Ok, first of all, let’s talk about the deck. This is a drop-through deck which allows to lower rider’s gravity and increase stability. It’s perfect for those who rides longboard for the first time. This deck is made from 8-ply natural hardrock maple with 42 inches in length and can stand the weight top to 250 lbs. So, if you are a big guy loves longboarding, just go for it and don’t be afraid that you’ll break the deck. This has been tested and confirmed by Jack, my friend who is exactly at 250 lbs. The durability of this Volador longboard is also a plus point. It’s perfect for daily use.
The grip tape on of top of the deck is quite grippy. This helps you stand firmly on the deck while pushing or falling more confidently, without the fear of falling. If you are a pro skater, this may affect your flexibility but as a beginner, we consider it a good thing. This longboard has a durable 70×51 mm wheels. Since this is an average size, the riding speed is comparative slow. But it’s totally fine when you just start. You can upgrade to bigger wheels later. For the bearings, the one come with the box is fine, but i would recommend you to it’s totally usable and enough for a beginner. However, if you want to go further and more smoothly on a single push, I would recommend to upgrade them.
For the design, well, it depends on you. Personally, I love those designs from Volador, especially bright and colorful one. They have six versions for you to choose. The print quality is excellent, with vibrant looking. Moreover, it has a fairly good turning radius for a longboard, so you can turn the direction quite easily with a slight lean left or right.
Overall, with an affordable price, this longboard is great for entry-level riders. It could be greater if you upgrade the wheels and bearings for a faster speed. However, I suggest not to do that from the beginning, let’s spend a couple weeks with your board then you will know what to do next.
Drop-thorough deck to increase balance and stability
Safer with grippy tape
Value for money
Bearings are acceptable, but not really good

The 2nd best longboard that I recommend for beginners is still a freeride with drop-through deck. If you are looking for a board that make your commuting faster, more fun and but still having good agility, you can consider this.
The deck is quite broad with 9.5 inches with grip tape on-top, so you can comfortably stand on it. Low deck height help you control the board easier with stable ride, easy turning and pushing. The deck is durable, made from maple laminated. However, if you exceed 200 lbs, this longboard may not be a good choice.
The trucks and bearings of this board are quite standard, there’s nothing much to talk about. They are enough for a smooth turning, unless your weight is around 160-200 lbs then it will be harder. However, it could be much better if you have a pair of REDS bearing to go with this longboard.
This longboard still has a reasonable price compared to its quality. You can use it for daily commuting, cruising or for downhill. It features are still good enough for a semi-pro skater so you don’t need to buy another one when you get more skills.
Drop-thorough deck for easy control
Wide board for better riding
Value for money
Not recommended for weight above 200 lbs
Hard to turn with high weight

If you want to have an easy start, quickly get used to longboarding but still can enjoy the fun of riding, a cruising longboard may be the best for you. In general, every carving longboard is beginner-friendly, it helps you master basic skills in a short period of time. Our pick in this type for you is a product from Quest, a very popular skateboard and longboard manufacturer.
This board has a really long deck, up to 44 inches, you can almost “dance” on it. The deck is made from original bamboo so it’s sturdy and durable, can bear up to 250 lbs weight. Unlike, drop-through or drop deck, this has top-mount trucks that make the deck higher to the ground. Many will say it would be a bit wobbly for beginner, but this design help you to make a sharply turn. You will soon be familiar with and have fun with your board.
The truck and wheels are quite good, turning radius is pretty tight. However, the bearings are not so good compared to other parts. To really enjoy the fun and excitement, we suggest you to upgrade the bearings.
With a good price, this is a decent longboard for beginners who want to start with entry-level skills. However, this board is not designed for other riding type. As it’s quite big, you can’t properly make any advanced skills with it. As a cruising longboard with higher deck, it’s not for downhill race that requires low center of gravity and stability.
44” length for better balance and control
Sturdy and durable deck
High weight capacity
Great for practicing basic skills
Bearings are not good
Not suitable for other riding types

If you are the one who seek the joy in adventure, enjoy adrenaline in the blood, then you should join us in the downhill ride, enjoy the breeze and freedom. So, you will need a drop deck longboard for it. And our recommendation is Minority.
Drop deck lowers the center of gravity and lock your feet down, low to the ground so you can keep a perfect balance. The grip tape is damn good like glue, make you safer and firmer on the deck when pushing, turning in high speed. The bearings are not bad at all. Trucks are a bit squeaky but it should be fine after fixing with soap shaving. The wheels however wobble and you need to tighten them quite regularly.
In overall, this is one of the best downhill longboards for beginners at its price. It’s totally enough for starters to practice. You can use this board for cruising/carving or commuting as well. I truly recommend you to take the first downhill ride after comfortably control the board. Be safe first, then to enjoy the race.
Low deck for good balance
Stable at high speed
Amazing grip tape
Wheels need to be tightened
Need skills for fullest use

I pick this longboard for those who are creative, live in no borders, want to create their own move. Yes, we’re talking about free style riding, you’re free to make your unique moves, dance with your board. Freestyle board require a higher standard than other longboards as it is specialized for stunts and tricks. So, the price of this longboard is higher in comparison with others. However, I think it’s worth investment, even with beginners.
This Magneto free-style longboard is one of the most technologically advance board in the market at the moment. The deck is made from hybrid of bamboo, fiberglass and carbon fiber which make it extremely light, durable and stiff, perfect for stunts. It can load up to maximum 275 lbs, so don’t worry that you’ll break the board. High rebound wheels give you a smooth riding and reduce the force impact to the board. Bearings are upgrade to ABEC 11 but it is somehow not as good as other components. The design of this board is really amazing, strong and mysterious.
This is one of the best longboards for freestyle although the price is fairly high. Buy this board only when you really love riding and interested in creating your own moves.
Light, stiff and durable
Quite high price
